How is that swanky Japanese Metro and Monorail trains to be built at a cost of more than 5 billion dollars in Chennai will co-exist with another set of urban train systems that have filthy station approaches – literally filled with human excrement?
We have maintained for long that neither Dravidian party – the AIADMK or DMK – is serious about public transport facilities that truly meet demand and are of clean, acceptable, affordable standards. As if to add grist to our argument, the passage from Poonamallee High Road to Park Town MRTS station is just a filthy passage. Lack of sanitation in the entire region and decent housing has resulted in massive slums in the nearby river bank. The people living there use the MRTS passage as an open air toilet (below the Stanley bridge, at right).
The picture shows the result of this on use of the passage, which you enter from the bustling arterial PH Road opposite the grand Chennai Central rail terminal.
It is a matter of shame that those who keep harping on self-respect are unable to provide even decent toilets to the people in their capital city.
