What are these people upto?
The difficult course open to this group of blind people to navigate their way on a Chennai road demonstrates all that is wrong with our civic sensibilities. For one, this road, as with almost all roads in the metro, has no footpath. The danger is compounded when the road surface is kept pitted and potholed by the Chennai Corporation. Sometimes, the available space is blocked by one of the newer police Hyundai Accent cruisers kept parked, eliminating any possibility of a smooth passage to Arcot Road. At some points of the day, there are crowds pouring out of a cinema theatre just at the spot where these men are walking. A big shopping complex at the junction makes life hell for everyone, more so for people like these.
The Indian Central Government and the State Governments, which lecture the people everyday employing a surfeit of platitudes need to get their basic intelligence working.
